In the old city of Sale, Morocco's first circus school, Cirque Shems'y is rehearsing a magical new show to celebrate the city’s spectacular pirate history. Hundreds of young people flock to audition, irresistibly drawn to the creativity, energy and freedom of the circus – and often desperate to escape their lives on the street. A handful will make it through the auditions to join the school and immerse themselves in a punishing training schedule. But in a country where conservative attitudes are at odds with physical and imaginative freedom, where there is no established circus tradition or audience, can Cirque Shms'y become a success? Can these young performers bring the passion of circus to Morocco and its people - and build for themselves the futures they dream of?
