Dream On: Sign language drama

The BAFTA-winning drama in British Sign Language by Ray Harrison Graham. Dream On is the story of 11 year old Danny, bright, mischievous, a fantastic storyteller and a committed practical joker.

Danny is deaf, and he’s also desperate for adventure. The summer holidays are just beginning, his best friend Jamal is coming home from America, and his small gang, deaf and hearing, are ready to go wherever Danny leads them. When a strange and magical caravan appears overnight in the woods nearby, Danny and Jamal are determined to find out who lives there…….

It’s a meeting which will change their lives. Dream On was originally commissioned by Channel 4 Schools as a drama in 5 x 10 minute episodes for children aged 9 -11. The brief was to create a story which appealed to both young deaf and hearing audiences, to increase awareness and understanding between deaf and hearing children, and to introduce the language and experience of deaf people to a hearing audience.

The young cast come from the Royal School for Deaf Children in Derby, Hamilton Lodge in Brighton and Heathlands in St Albans. This was a first television role for Samantha Baker, who has gone on to play Kelly in 3 series of Rush, and Elena in the Inspector Linley Mysteries on BBC.

Dream On has since proved to have a much wider appeal to both family and adult audiences as well as schools. Written by Ray Harrison Graham, directed is Cilla Ware and produced Hilary Durman as a Resource Base, Dream On is production for Channel 4. Dream On has won many awards including a BAFTA for Best Schools Drama, and a Royal Television Society (RTS) Award.
